Bio

Riccardo Funari received his degree in Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology in 2011 and his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering in 2015 from the University of Naples “Federico II” (Italy). He spent the next two years as a post-doctoral researcher between the University of Naples “Federico II” and the Jülich Forschungszentrum (Germany). From 2017 to 2021, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher in the Micro/Bio/Nanofluidic unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (Japan). Then, in 2021, he returned to Italy as an assistant professor at the University of Bari “Aldo Moro.” In 2024, he joined Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa (Italy) as an assistant professor in the Institute of Mechanical Intelligence, within the Photonic Sensing Integrated Systems research group. He has authored 24 papers and holds 2 patents, focusing on the use of biosensing and biotechnology to improve medical diagnostics, quantify harmful compounds like pesticides, toxins, and heavy metals, and track the presence of food contaminants in real samples.
