Francesco Greco is an Associate Professor at the Biorobotics Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA), Pisa since Sep 2021 and Head of the Laboratory of Applied Materials for Printed and Soft Electronics.He retains a joint affiliation at Institute of Solid State Physics  - TUGraz where he was Assistant Professor (2017-2021).

Formerly, he has been Associate Professor at School of Advanced Science and Engineering, Waseda University, Tokyo (Japan), Jan 2016 - Sep 2017, appointed by the Top Global University Program, Unit for Energy and Nanomaterials, JAPAN. He has been an Invited Lecturer at Waseda University in 2018 and 2020. He was  a Researcher (Team Leader) at Center for MicroBiorobotics of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (CMBR IIT), 2013 – 2017 working on smart materials for biorobotics and biomedicine. He was a postdoc at CRIM Lab (Center of Research in MicroEngineering) of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa (Italy) in 2009 and then at CMBR-IIT 2009-2013. In 2007 he was a guest researcher at SOPRA S.A. (Paris, France).

He received a MSc in Materials Science (with honours) in 2004 and Ph.D. in Chemical Sciences in 2009 from the University of Pisa, Italy.

 His research focuses on functional polymer and composite materials with applications in organic bioelectronics, biomedicine, soft- and bio-robotics, sensors. So far, he supervised the research work of 10 Master students, 9 PhD Students, 4 Postdocs and of several Bachelor Students. At TUGraz he is leading the Laboratory of Applied Materials for Printed and Soft electronics (LAMPSe) currently composed of 3 PhD students, 2 Master students, several Bachelor students. He has relevant experience as PI in several European, Regional and Industry-funded projects and as academic consultant for advanced polymer materials and electromedical devices. He is the (co)author of ~ 60 peer-reviewed full papers, 4 book chapters and coinventor of 7 international patents/patents applications.

Since July 2018 he holds National Italian Habilitation (ASN) as Associate Professor in 3 disciplines: Experimental Physics of Matter (02-B1), Chemical Foundations of Technologies (03-B2), Bioengineering (09-G2).

Austrian Habilitation in Experimental Physics of Materials obtained in July 2021 at TUGraz.

Ricerca

Polymer, nanocomposite functional and stimuli-responsive materials, interfaces with applications in organic (bio)electronics, soft robotics and biomedicine.

3 main areas:

  1. SMART MATERIALS – SOFT ACTUATORS & SENSORS - Electro Active Polymers and other stimuli-responsive polymeric materials for soft bioinspired actuators and sensors;
  2. SOFT & TATTOO electronics - Polymer nanosheets, ink-jet printing and laser-induced synthesis of soft/flexible/stretchable conductors and functional materials, conformable/skin-contact organic (bio)electronics, temporary tattoos for biosensing and human machine interfaces;
  3. BIOINSPIRED SURFACES & BIOINTERFACES - Micro/nanostructured and bioinspired functional surfaces with tunable properties, smart biointerfaces; top-down and bottom-up approaches to microfabrication and manufacturing: direct laser writing, printing, self-assembling, wrinkling.
