Claudio jose Oton nieto


Claudio J. Oton (born in Cartagena, Spain, 1978) received his degree in Physics in 2000 and PhD in 2005 in University of La Laguna (Spain). Then he spent 4 years in the Optoelectronics Research Centre, Southampton, UK as a post-doctoral research fellow and Marie Curie fellow. In 2009 he joined the Nanophotonics Research Centre, in Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, (Spain) as a Senior Research Fellow. Finally, from 2012 he is Assistant Professor at TeCIP Institute, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa (Italy). He is author of more than 120 scientific papers and conferences (h-index 23). He has participated in several international research projects and contracts. As a coordinator, he has been research unit coordinator of EU FP7 project IRIS, technical coordinator of the Sant'Anna-General Electric Joint Lab in Florence, and coordinator of other research contracts with the private sector.

His main research fields are:

  • Silicon photonics: Optical design and characterization of optical devices integrated in silicon technology. His main contributions regard design of optical switches, grating couplers, interleavers, crossings, nonlinear devices, and integrated optical systems for telecommunications and sensing.
  • Optical fiber sensors: Distributed and FBG fiber sensing systems. Topics include Distributed Acoustic Sensors (DAS), Brillouin OTDA systems, Raman-based Distributed Temperature Sensors, and Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing systems.
  • Photonic integration of optical sensors: Design and testing of photonic integrated circuits to be used as interrogators of optical sensing systems, such as FBGs or biophotonic sensors.

Claudio Oton is coordinating the postgraduate course "Lab of Optical Sensing and Components" and teaching assistant in the course "Optical Fiber Sensor Systems".
