The Management and Healthcare Laboratory (MeS) of the Institute of Management of the Sant'Anna School celebrates its 20 years of activity, including research and training, in the field of healthcare management, promoting a major event scheduled for Thursday, 5 December from 9.30 a.m., at the PalaTodisco in San Giuliano Terme (Pisa), entitled 'Innovation and change for tomorrow's healthcare. 20 years of research and training at the MeS Laboratory: reflections on the future of healthcare systems'. It is a day of speeches, round tables, and debates with the participation of academics, experts, and policy makers to take stock of these 20 years and to start tackling the challenges of future healthcare. At the opening session, Orazio Schillaci (TBC), Minister of Health; Eugenio Giani (TBC); President of the Region of Tuscany; Simone Bezzini (TBC), Councillor for the Right to Health and Healthcare of the Region of Tuscany, have been invited to give institutional greetings. This session will include speeches by Sabina Nuti, Rector of the Sant'Anna School and founder of the Management and Health Laboratory (MeS) in 2004; Lino Cinquini, Director of the Institute of Management of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna; Michele Emdin, Coordinator of the interdisciplinary Health Science Centre of the Sant'Anna School.

The identikit of the MeS and the Target to evaluate the performance of health systems and further innovations.
The Management and Healthcare Laboratory (MeS), one of the three areas of the Institute of Management of the Sant'Anna School, carries out research activities in synergy with the Interdisciplinary Centre Health Science, with the aim of sharing and developing new knowledge to understand the organisational, institutional and regulatory dynamics that characterise complex systems such as healthcare. From 2004, the year of its foundation, to 2019, the Management and Healthcare Laboratory (MeS) was directed by Full Professor Sabina Nuti. Today, the laboratory, under the leadership of Full Professor Milena Vainieri, is made up of more than 50 people, including professors and lecturers, researchers, research assistants and research fellows, collaborators and members of the technical-administrative staff.
Among the most relevant initiatives, there is the design and development of the Performance Evaluation System, exemplified by the so-called ‘Target’, introduced in 2004, to which the ‘Pentagram’ was added in 2018, a tool capable of helping insiders - but also citizens - to understand, in an immediate way, the strengths and weaknesses of healthcare systems, based on more than 200 indicators. To date, the ‘Target’ of the Management and Healthcare Laboratory (MeS) is used by seven Italian regions (Tuscany, Veneto, Lombardy, Apulia, Umbria, Basilicata and Friuli-Venezia Giulia) and two Autonomous Provinces (Trento and Bolzano) to assess the performance of their healthcare systems. In addition, over the last ten years, the laboratory has set up observatories for the comparison of patient-reported outcomes and experiences coordinated by Assistant Professor Sabina De Rosis, making use of the latest generation of IT tools. Over the last 10 years, the Management and Healthcare Laboratory (MeS) has also deepened the analysis of decision-making models through the study of behavioural sciences by setting up the ‘Behavioural Insight Unit directed by Associate Professor Nicola Bellè. Finally, through training activities coordinated by Dr. Manuela Furlan, the laboratory has contributed to the development of the managerial skills of over 4,000 health system professionals.

The event to celebrate 20 years of activity and guests.
‘Positions, professions and behaviours: a balance to be built’, “Citizens, users, patients: what role for the future of the socio-health system?”, “Integrated pathways and personalisation of care: from the Target to the Pentagram, towards what horizons?”, “Governance mechanisms and sustainability dilemmas”. ‘Which paradigm to pursue for the dialogue between equity, sustainability and quality of care?’ are the central themes of the day's programme on Thursday 5 December at the Palatodisco. Researchers from the Management and Healthcare Laboratory (MeS) will lead the discussion among experts, healthcare professionals, lecturers, and representatives of institutions. The thematic workshops are scheduled to be attended by Domenico Bodega, Claudio Costa, Paola Adinolfi, Donatella Pagliacci, Cristina Masella, Giorgio Simon, Cristina Rizzo, Michela Maielli, Antonio Fanolla, Andrea Vannucci, Lucia Lispi, Federico Gelli, Francesco Longo, Silvia Vigna, Modesta Visca. The final reflections, moderated by Francesco Schiavone, will be shared by Americo Cicchetti, Enrico Rossi, Alessio Gramolati, Paolo Ferragina, Lucia Bisceglia, Elio Borgonovi and Domenico Mantoan.

Waiting for the event on Thursday 5 December: statements.
‘The performance evaluation system of the Management and Healthcare Laboratory (MeS) has been recognised as an example of excellence in knowledge transfer and is a good example of fruitful collaboration between universities and public administration for the benefit of the community. It is a way of doing applied research that has equipped healthcare systems with evidence and data to support managerial decision-making processes, emphasises Rector Sabina Nuti. ‘In the first ten years of the Management and Healthcare Laboratory's (MeS) activities, we focused on developing logics and tools to support the performance evaluation of healthcare services. In the last ten, we have consolidated our foundations, introducing innovations in several areas. In the coming years, we plan to study and propose tools to support the transformation of healthcare systems to make them more equitable and sustainable, also through the use of digital tools,' says the laboratory's Scientific Coordinator Milena Vainieri.
