The Photonic Sensing Integrated Systems (PSIS) group conducts research in the field of fiber optic sensing and integrated photonics for sensing applications. Established in 2002, the group is involved in public and industry-sponsored research projects across various strategic sectors, including energy, transportation (automotive and railway), space, and biomedical fields.

The group has two main research areas. The first focuses on using optical fibers as highly sensitive sensors, as the propagation of light through the fiber responds to a range of physical and chemical parameters, such as temperature, vibration, strain, pressure, and refractive index. This enables both point-specific and distributed sensing along the fiber’s length, providing insights that are unmatched by other technologies. The second area of focus is the miniaturization of measurement devices (interrogators), with the goal of integrating these interrogators onto silicon chips. This approach makes them smaller, lighter, and more cost-effective, making them suitable for large-scale applications. Applications of these devices span diverse fields, such as space, energy, structural monitoring, medical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring.
