Bio

Diana Piroli is a political philosopher interested in climate justice, politics of recognition and mainly inspired by Political Liberalism. She is a Post-doctoral Researcher at the Institute of Law, Politics, and Development (DIRPOLIS) at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies. Research Area: Ethics and Global Challenges. From May 1st, she will join the University of Catania as a Post-doctoral Researcher.

She obtained her Ph.D., MA, and Bachelor's Degree in moral and political philosophy, mentored by Prof. Alessandro Pinzani and Prof. Denilson Werle at the University of Santa Catarina (2017-2021), Brazil, and worked as a research fellow at the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Catania (2022-2023), Italy. She also actively participated in Marie-Curie Rise Project's 'Kant in South America' (KANTINSA), coordinated by Prof. Luigi Caranti. Additionally, Dr. Piroli acted as visiting researcher in Argentina at CONICET (2023), in Belgium at Chaire Hoover - UCLouvain (2022), and in Germany at the Center for Humanities and Social Change Berlin at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (2019-2020).

She also acts as Referee in peer-review journals in South America and Europe, such as 'Direito, Estado e Sociedade' (PUC-Rio, Brazil), 'Dissonância: Revista de Teoria Crítica' (Unicamp, Brazil), 'Ethic@' (UFSC, Brazil), 'Kìnesis' (University of Marilia, Brazil), 'Kriterion' (USP, Brazil); 'Lessico di Etica pubblica' (CeSPeC, Italy), 'Leviathan: Cadernos de Pesquisa Política' (USP, Brazil), 'Lua Nova' (USP, Brazil), 'Peri' (UFSC, Brazil), 'Revista de Estudios Kantianos' (Sociedad de Estudios Kantianos en Lengua Española, Spain), 'TRANS/FORM/AÇÃO' (Unesp, Brazil).

Research

Her work primarily concentrates on the relationship between theories of justice and politics of recognition in and for liberal democracies today. Inspired by Nancy Fraser's deontological turn and Rawls' political liberalism, her Dissertation proposed an innovative way for political institutions to positively promote - or, at least, negatively not to injure - the primary social conditions so that people can develop their self-respect and self-esteem, without at the expense of the (cultural) pluralism.

Additionally, Dr. Piroli has recently extended her research to climate justice. Particularly, she has been investigating and publishing about: (a) the 'recognition dimension' in climate justice; (b) how this dimention yet analytical distinct can be compatible with the distributive issues; and, more recently, (c) the Carbon Budget.

At the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, Dr. Piroli actively participates in the Italian 'PRO3 Project: Theories and Toolkit for the Ecological Transition: Philosophical, Mathematical, Ethical and Legal Profiles of the Carbon Budget Sustainability Challenge' (Grant Number: PROGMIURC21_23AP). The Project is a research realized in partnership with the Scuola Normale Superiore and IUSS Pavia and financed by the Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca (MUR). At the Sant'Anna School, Dr. Piroli is also actively participating at the European Programm 'EELISA', within a research partnership between Sant'Anna School, Scuola Normale, the Institut Jean Nicod (PSL-ENS), and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

At Sant'Anna School, Dr. Piroli has also formally participated in remote mode as institutional delegate during the United Nations Climate Change Conference 28 (COP28) in Dubai.
