Ph.D. topic: Modeling and Control of Continuum Soft Manipulators

Carlo Alessi is a Ph.D. student at the BioRobotics Institute of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. His main research interest is the application of Machine Learning for motor control, sensory-motor coordination, and cognition in autonomous robots. In particular, he works in modeling and control of soft robots in the Brain-Inspired Robotics Laboratory (Soft Robotics Area). Moreover, he contributes to the WP7 "Robot behavioral control" of the European project PROBOSCIS.
He graduated in Computer Science (BSc) and Artificial Intelligence (MSc) at the University of Pisa. As an undergraduate, he was visiting student at the University of Bristol, the University of Barcelona, and the Technical University of Munich. Moreover, he gained industry experience working full-time as a Student Software Engineer at Nokia in Bristol.
Before the Ph.D., he was a research assistant at the BioRobotics Institute. He was involved in the Educative Soft Robotics project in collaboration with ROBOTECH and GREAT Robotics, two spin-off companies of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna.
When out of the lab or the library, he plays football.
